(1) What are the licensing procedures for producing certified conventional and genetically modified seeds of water efficient maize for Africa in South Africa; (2) (a) which institutions are involved in the licensing procedures and (b) what are their roles?
Reply:
- Local seed companies wishing to market WEMA varieties are invited to apply to the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) for sub-licences to market WEMA varieties.
- (a) AATF is currently the only sub-licencing partner to the WEMA project as per the project agreement with WEMA partners. The role of the AATF is to link the needs of resource-poor farmers with potential technological solutions.
