Following his department’s advisory indicating that he will be engaging with traditional leaders in the Eastern Cape on the exploration of oil and gas, (a) what informed his department’s decision to not involve communities through public participation and (b) how will meeting traditional leaders address the various concerns raised by communities and civil society during the Wild Coast protests? Reply:
The visits to the traditional leadership in the Eastern Cape are part and parcel of the ongoing departmental engagements with stakeholders on issues affecting the minerals and energy industries. As part of the stakeholder engagement process, the department continuously consult interested and affected parties including communities and civil societies.
