Rawula, Mr T to ask the Minister of Health

(a) What is the (i) name, (ii) location and (iii) patient capacity of each hospital that was built with materials containing asbestos and (b) what is the reason for this in each case?

Reply:

(a) (i), (ii), (iii)

On managing the protocol on Asbestos components in our various public health facilities, in terms of Government Notice R155, covering Regulation 2001 based on which Asbestos guide for Asbestos Regulation 2001 and guide for demolition work all issued in March 2003, a total of 4 394 public health facilities were inspected.

The situation is as follows:

  • Asbestos ceilings: 657 (see Annexure 1)
  • Asbestos roof: 571 (see Annexure 2)
  • Asbestos internal walls: 116 (see Annexure 3)
  • Asbestos external walls: 75 (see Annexure 4)

(b) The reason is that in most buildings, especially ceilings, were made of asbestos. We are following the protocol to deal with them as and when necessary according to the guidelines.

END.
