Parliament is calling for nominations/applications for the new Public Protector – deadline is 24 June 2016.
The person must be a South African citizen, who is a fit and proper person to hold such office, and who for a cumulative period of at least 10 years is a Judge of a High Court; or has practised as an advocate/attorney; or has lectured in law at a university; or has specialised knowledge of or experience, in the administration of justice, public administration or public finance; or has been a Member of Parliament; or has a combination of the above experience. The Department of Social Development is working on a Victim Support Services Bill, which will strengthen the protection, care and support services for victims of crime and violence.

Comment is sought by 15 June 2016 on the draft Critical Infrastructure Protection Bill.

The Border Management Authority Bill was introduced to Parliament by the Minister of Home Affairs.

This year, the Department of Social Development will be amending the NPO Act to ensure that NPOs are better placed to deliver services without any obstacles.  The NPO Bill will be introduced to Parliament before the end of the current financial year.

The Portfolio Committee on Transport invites the public to comment on two bills: Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Amendment Bill and the National Land Transport Amendment Bill.

Parliament has mandated the Standing Committee on Finance to review the Money Bills Amendment Procedure and Related Matters Act, which has been found to be too onerous to implement.

The National Assembly has established an ad hoc committee to review the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act to take account of the Constitutional Court judgment on the use of security services in the House.

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has published the Local Government Municipal Structures Amendment Draft Bill and is asking you to comment. Comments can be emailed to Dr Kevin Naidoo at [email protected] by Saturday, 25 June 2016.

Parliament passed a series of Bills and submitted these to the President for assent before their recess break. These include the https://pmg.org.za/bill/550/ , Appropriation Bill, Financial Intelligence Centre Amendment Bill, Performing Animals Protection Amendment Bill

The Criminal Matters Amendment Act – aimed at deterring cable theft and damage to infrastructure – came into effect on 1 June 2016.

The Division of Revenue Bill was assented to and signed by President on 17 May 2016.

The Department of Water and Sanitation is finalising the National Water and Sanitation Bill that will be introduced into Parliament and be published for public consultation during this financial year. The objective of the Bill is to radically transform the water and sanitation sector across the value chain and create an enabling environment for the delivery of basic water and sanitation services to communities who were historically disadvantaged, thus enhancing access, equity and sustainability.

The Labour Laws Amendment Bill is the first Private Members Bill to clear the preliminary hurdle after the Labour Committee unanimously approved its desirability. The Bill was drafted by the ACDP.  Since 2012, 18 Private Members Bills were introduced. Of these, 16 were lapsed, withdrawn or rejected and 1 is stalled.

The National Assembly approved three Bills and transmitted them to the NCOP for concurrence. These include the Higher Education Amendment Bill , UIF Bill and Immigration Amendment Bill.

The Department of Energy is working on six bills for consideration by Parliament and which will introduced in this financial year. These include the National Energy Regulation Amendment Bill, Gas Amendment Bill, Upstream Gas Bill, Petroleum Agency of South Africa Establishment Bill, Petroleum Products Amendment Bill and the Independent Power Producer Office Establishment Bill.
