Election of Chairperson

Meeting report

Mr Llewellyn Brown, Committee Secretary, opened the meeting by introducing the Committee Secretariat. He explained that the main agenda was the election of a Chairperson under National Assembly rules.

Ms K Maimela (ANC) moved to adopt the agenda and was seconded by Ms S Xego (ANC).

Mr Brown called for nominations.

Ms P Xaba-Ntshaba (ANC) nominated Ms Maimela as Chairperson of the Committee. The nomination was seconded by Mr N Kodwa (ANC).

Ms Maimela accepted the nomination.

Mr Brown called for further nominations from the floor.

Ms Maimela was elected Chairperson without any further nominations.

Mr Brown handed over the meeting to Ms Maimela to chair.

Ms Maimela thanked the members for electing her. She emphasised the sector’s importance in shaping future generations and sought members’ support in fulfilling their responsibilities.

The Chairperson asked that the draft programme for the remainder of the term be shared with Members in due course.

The Chairperson said the Committee urgently needed to engage the Department of Basic Education (DBE), the South African Council for Educators (SACE), and the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi) on Budget Vote 16: Basic Education (including Annual Performance Plans for 2024/25). The Committee hoped to adopt its report on Budget Vote 16: Basic Education on Friday, 12 July 2024.
