Oversight Visit Reports
Meeting Summary
The Committee convened to consider its draft reports for its oversight visits to Saxonsea Junior High School; AVCC Pikkieland ECD and Bo-Kaap Daycare Centre; Ned Doman High School; Phoenix High School; Heideveld High School; as well as Hoepel Hoekie Educare and Holland Early Learning Centre. The reports were adopted with amendments.
The Committee also considered and adopted its draft minutes of 17 March 2023 and the Committee Annual Report.
The Chairperson said that when the Committee comes back from constituency recess, the strategy meeting with the energy committee needs to occur. The date will be decided on.
The Community Safety Portfolio is looking at 24 July to go to Gauteng to do the previous resolution for community safety. There will be discussion to either shorten this trip or choose another week for the meeting. Issues on online enrollment and enrollment criteria will be sent to the Education Department for respo nse.

There were absence apologies from Mr F Christians (ACDP) and Mr K Sayed (ANC) for the oversight visit.

The Chairperson said that when the Committee returns from constituency recess, the strategy meeting with the energy committee needs to occur. The date will be decided on.
She said that the Community Safety Portfolio is looking at 24 July as the date for going to Gauteng to do the previous resolution for community safety. The Chairperson said that there will be discussion to either shorten this trip or choose another week for the meeting. The interesting topics she said were infrastructure, ECGs, educational losses (mathematics and reading), and so on.
Mr Sayed recommended that the topics around community safety and safety at schools should be discussed.
The Committee will meet again on 01 August 2023.
Mr Sayed asked about the invitation to visit Zuluthemba High School – will this occur during the strat-planning session?
The Chairperson replied to Mr Sayed and said feedback should be in by Thursday. Queries will be on Excel sheets.
Mr G Brinkhuis (Al Jama-ah) said that online enrollment for learners is problematic since the school does not receive all applications. Is there an intervention for this?
The Chairperson said that the details should be sent to the Department.
Mr Brinkhuis said that, in schools, preference is given to children outside the area. Are these criteria for enrollment?
The Chairperson replied that, according to her knowledge, there are no such criteria. Information will be sent to the Department for a follow up on this.
The Chairperson thanked the Members for attending the meeting.
