The Committee reconvened in a virtual meeting to discuss and finalise the shortlist of candidates for the SABC Board vacancies.

After the first nominations, looking at the common candidate numbers between the three parties and the seven current serving numbers, the Committee had a total of 21 candidates (9 females and 12 males) on the shortlist as they agreed in principle. The parties had to engage and persuade each other on the remaining 15 candidates, considering the principles of inclusivity discussed in the earlier meeting.

The Committee added 14 more candidates to its proposed shortlist and would reconvene at 19:00 to consider the subcommittee recommendation on shortlisted candidates for the SABC Board vacancies and adopt the Committee report by the Portfolio Committee on Communications.

Meeting report

The Chairperson welcomed the Members back to the meeting and asked the Committee support if they received any feedback from the EFF regarding their outstanding submission of their proposed candidates.

The Committee Secretary said she had not received anything and tried to contact them without success.

The Chairperson said the Committee would proceed as agreed if the EFF did not submit by 13:00.

He said he had received an appeal letter from Mr Mattison that would need to be considered by the Legal Unit before the Committee adopted the shortlist in the evening. Having gone through the letter, some of the facts raised would need to be verified because he referred to Mr Ngoma, who was giving support to the section 194 Committee. The paragraph that referred to ‘making contact’ in the advert was clear that contact needed to be made with Ms Portia Ntabeni, the Committee Secretary responsible for this process. He said by the time the Committee reconvened in the evening, the fact-checking process would have been completed by the Legal team and presented for the Committee to decide.

The Chairperson asked the representative from the EFF if the Committee should proceed as she logged into the meeting.

Ms L Tito (EFF) said the Committee should proceed as agreed because they had nothing to submit.

The Chairperson handed over to the Committee support to present the spreadsheet and asked them to indicate when referring to current serving members of the Board.

Mr Mbombo Maleka, Content Advisor, explained the contents of the spreadsheet.

The candidate numbers that were common in all three parties were: 95, 92,103/4,37

The candidate numbers that were common between the ANC and the DA were: 7,12,97,118,22,38

The candidates numbers that were common between the ANC and the IFP were: 1,6,57,13,48,58,83,76,25,5

The common candidate number between the DA and the IFP was candidate 47.

The current serving members of the Board who were nominated were candidates number: 6,57,37,95,98

The current serving Board members who were common in all parties were: 92, 103/4

Members agreed.

The Chairperson allowed Members 5 minutes to consult their caucuses and discuss the remaining 15 candidates privately while keeping in mind the principles of inclusivity discussed in the meeting.

Ms D Kohler Barnard (DA) proposed candidate numbers: 93, 59,14,80,105

Ms A Mthembu (ANC) proposed candidate numbers: 11, 85, 58, 77, 83, 107, 52, 82,76

Ms Z Majozi (IFP) had trouble reconnecting to the meeting because of load shedding and could not propose candidates on behalf of the IFP.

The Chairperson said the Committee would move forward with the names that it added, bringing the total shortlist to 35 candidates, and would consult the IFP on whether they would like to propose additional names before the Committee would adopt the report in the evening.

The meeting was adjourned for reconvention at 19:00.
