Meeting report

Opening remarks

The Acting Chairperson immediately assumed the Acting role without a formal selection process. He then welcomed the members and announced the apologies of the Chairperson of the Committee and other members.

He noted that item two on the agenda will not be adopted because only a few members were present at the meeting.

Members agreed with the Acting Chairperson.

Furthermore, as for the discussion on the Public Protector’s Report about a violation of the Executive Ethics Code by the former and current Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, the Chairperson stated that the matter is due to be dealt with by the Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD); however it was presented to the Portfolio Committee by the Speaker. He suggested that this matter be dealt with in the JSCD since the majority of the members sat in that committee.  Therefore, the Report will be dealt with when the JSCD meets the following week.

Members also agreed with the suggestion.

Study Tour

The Acting Chairperson stated that the Study tour has been approved but can only take place from the 15th of January 2018. However, Members still need to discuss who would go, because the Committee has a membership of nine members, but only eight members of the committee can go.

Members agreed to keep it at eight members, with the selection of five ANC members, two DA members and one member from the other small parties. More details will be discussed further when the JSCD meets in terms of which members will be attending the study tour.

The Acting Chairperson thanked the present members.

The meeting was adjourned.
