Meeting Summary

The Committee elected Mr Comely Maxegwana as the new Portfolio Committee on Communications chairperson.

Meeting report

The Committee Secretary proceeded with the nomination process.

Only two people were nominated to be elected for the position of Committee Chairperson: Mr Maxegwana and Mr Tseli.

Committee members were asked to choose and Mr Maxegwana was chosen.

The Committee Secretary handed over to the new chairperson.

The Chairperson thanked the Committee for being nominated to this position. He said that it was quite challenging to be in this position but they will learn as they proceed. As far as he is concerned, the Committee represents Parliament. When they go out there, they represent Parliament. Even if they derive from different political parties, within the committee work, they must cooperate in order to fulfill the committee portfolio. Our fights in Parliament have a different stake here. Collectively they come as a committee and they must understand that they represent a big nation. The Committee has to work hand in hand with the department officials. They will collectively take responsibility for a member's mistakes; they correct it collectively as a team. In the Agriculture Portfolio Committee from where he comes, the committee does what the community wants which is what they will do with this portfolio. He said he accepts the responsibility of being a chairperson.

Ms P van Damme (DA) welcomed the chair and said she was looking forward to working with him.

Ms N Ndongeni (ANC) said that Communications is key for us. She also welcomed the new chairperson.

The Chair asked if anyone wanted to raise any issues as they have little to discuss at this meeting. If there is no one with any issues, he would assume that everyone agrees with the decisions made. He said that as there were no points raised, that they were done. They would meet when they were informed.

Meeting adjourned.
