Meeting Summary

The Committee met to approve the proposed remuneration for Magistrates. The Department of Justice and Constitutional assured Members that all outstanding glitches had been resolved. Accordingly, the Committee adopted the remuneration.

Meeting report

The Chairperson said that the main role of the Committee would be to approve or reject the proposed remuneration for Magistrates. The Committee should consider the recommendation.

Mr J Jeffery (ANC) asked the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) if it was satisfied that there were no administrative glitches.

Adv Johan De Lange, Principle State Law Advisor, DoJ&CD, said that the administrative glitches had been resolved since the extension of civil jurisdiction to the regional courts. The only issue was that the remuneration of an Acting Magistrate was an issue presently before the courts.

Mr S Swart (ACDP) asked if the final figures were all inclusive of the total gross benefits.

Adv De Lange replied in the affirmative.

Mr Jeffery moved for adoption.

Mr Swart seconded.

The meeting was adjourned.
