Report of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on the Draft notice and schedule determining the rate, with effect from 1 April 2022, at which Salaries, Allowances and benefits are payable to Magistrates Annually, for approval by Parliament in terms of Section 12(1) of the Magistrates Act, 1993 (Act No 90 of 1993), Dated 30 August 2023

 

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services, having considered the Draft notice and schedule determining the rate, with effect from 1 April 2022, at which salaries, allowances and benefits are payable to magistrates annually, reports as follows.

 

  1. The Committee notes that the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers (Independent Commission) recommended a 3.8% increase for all public office bearers, including magistrates, for the financial year 2022/23.
     
  2. The Committee notes further that President has proposed a 3% salary increment for magistrates, with effect from 1 April 2022, having considered the Independent Commission’s recommendations and the serious economic situation of the country.
     
  3. The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services, having considered the Draft notice and schedule determining the rate, with effect from 1 April 2022, at which salaries, allowances and benefits are payable to magistrates annually, recommends that the House, in terms of section 12(3) of the Magistrates Act (No 90 of 1993), approve the Draft Notice and Schedule.
