Report of the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation on Petition from residents of Tsakane, Sunnyridge, Symhurst, Bedfordview, Primrose and Gerdview calling for an investigation into the causes of the water crisis in Gauteng submitted in terms of Rule 312 (Mr. M Waters) dated 19 August 2015

The Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation, having considered the above-mentioned petition, referred to it on 10 December 2014, reports as follows:

The Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation received a briefing from the Department of Water and Sanitation as well as the Rand Water Board in respect of the water shortages in parts of Gauteng. Members of the Portfolio Committee, as part of their oversight role, also conducted an emergency site visit to the Palmiet pump station on the 26th September 2014, during the height of the water supply interruptions.

The Portfolio Committee noted that the water supply interruptions were as a result of a number of factors including vandalism of infrastructure and cable theft which detrimentally affects the operations of pump station supplying water.

The Portfolio Committee concluded that it was an electricity crisis more than a water crisis and noted the interventions of the the Department of Water and Sanitation and Rand Water respectively, to resolve the water shortages in parts of Gauteng.
