Train Services

There is a lot of dissatisfaction when it comes to Metrorail. The public routinely complains that Metrorail has an unreliable service as their trains do not complete the journeys according to schedule because of breakdowns, and customer service – in the way they communicated to customers – is lacking. The safety of Passengers is highly compromised due to the high occurrences of vandalism and cable theft. When briefing lawmakers, PRASA admitted that customer dissatisfaction led to vandalism as a way of expressing dissatisfaction. During 2016/2017 322 carriages were set alight and 3,591 crime incidents were reported on Metrorail. Also, during this period only 77.4% of trains ran on time. Measures to improve service delivery included improved train availability; a reduction of crime-related incidents involving passengers; and a reduction in passenger injuries and fatalities by reducing overcrowding. According to the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 92% of local businesses say that the rail service is worse than a year ago and many pointing out that it is a  threat to their viability.
