ELECTION OF CHAIRPERSON

SUMMARY
The Committee elected Mr R Sonto (ANC) as their chairperson. A draft resolution that requested an extension of the deadline for the Committee’s recommendations until the end of November would be forwarded to the Office of the Speaker. It was agreed that the Committee meet on Thursday afternoons after the sitting of the House.

MINUTES
The Committee Secretary, Mr Lusanda Myoli, presided over the meeting until a Chairperson was elected. Mr R Sonto (ANC) was nominated and elected as the Chairperson.

Mr Sonto proposed a draft resolution that requested an extension of the deadline for the Committee’s final recommendations, from the 31 October 2007 to the end of the fourth term of Parliament.

Mr M Swathe (DA) seconded the motion and stated that the resolution be forwarded to the Speaker as soon as possible.

Mr Sonto suggested that a road map be designed as the Committee needed to conduct a thorough investigation. He informed the Committee that the Office of the Speaker would address the Committee on Friday 2 November 2007. In addition a preliminary programme needed to be devised.

Mr B Mkongi (ANC) commented that he agreed with the approach but had an issue with the Committee meeting on Fridays. He suggested that the Committee meet on Thursday afternoons after the House has met.

Mr Swathe suggested that the Chairperson use his own discretion.

Mr Sonto remarked that Thursday was the only free day.

Mr Sonto thanked the Committee and adjourned the meeting.
