PROGRESS ON THE ADVERT OF NOMINATION OF PERSONS

MINUTES
The Chairperson welcome members of the Committee .She said the main purpose of the meeting was to update members about the progress made with regard to the advert on nomination of persons to fill vacancies on the commission on gender equality. The Committee noted the advert only appeared to one newspaper. She said the advert was supposed to be on newspapers before the 27^th of May 2006 to enable the Committee to prepare shortlisting. She felt that a proof that states advert is included on newspapers was required.

Discussion
Ms M Morutoa (ANC) express concerns over the interaction between media and the Department. She asked how did they prove that the advert was on the paper. She felt the possibility that newspapers might had not had enough space to put the advert on

Mr B Kali (Secretary) felt that the newspapers usually look the deadlines of the advert the possibility was they might had missed the deadline, and secondly when they issue advert, they sent invoice together with a copy of the newspaper.

The Chairperson said recommended that she would make a follow-up on the matter.

Mr P Mathebe (ANC) asked why the advert had not been placed on newspaper during the week.

Ms Morutoa felt the advert should be placed in most newspapers especially community newspaper as to afford rural people opportunity to respond to it.

The Chairperson felt since there were many newspaper in the country, it would be too expensive for the department to consider all of them but she would rather discuss the matter with the department to ascertain how many newspaper would the department be afforded to pay.

Proceedings:
The Chairperson apologised for the previously scheduled meeting not taking place.

Members conveyed that they had not seen the advert in the Sunday's newspapers and requested to be provided with a copy by the Department. A question arose regarding the choice of newspapers by the Department, whether there is a specific reason to limit to only two.

The Committee would check what previous questions were asked during interviews, so as to avoid asking the same questions. It would also draw from the advert what questions need to be asked.

The Committee also requires minutes of the preceding meeting to be available at each meeting.
