Election of Chairperson

Meeting report

The Committee Secretary welcomed everyone present.

He did a roll call to check which Members were present.

He introduced the Committee Staff.

He announced that the purpose of the meeting was to elect the Committee chairperson as per the National Council of Provinces Rule 109.

He briefly outlined the election process.

He called for nominations.

Dr I Scheurkogel (DA, Free State) nominated Mr F Badenhorst (DA, Western Cape).

Mr T Kaunda (ANC, KwaZulu-Natal) supported the nomination.

Mr Badenhorst accepted the nomination.

There were no further nominations or objections.

Mr Badenhorst was the duly elected Chairperson.

The Chairperson thanked his party, the DA, for trusting him to represent it in this capacity as a returning Member of the NCOP. Although he was new to the Committee, he assured Members that he was looking forward to the challenge.

The Committee has oversight over the Departments of Public Works, Infrastructure, Transport, Monitoring and Evaluation, and the Minister in the Presidency. With its vast portfolios, the Committee is one of the engine rooms in the NCOP. The mission is clear: to rescue South Africa. Meetings will commence on time, as there will be a lot of work to get done.
