Election of Chairperson

Meeting report

The Senior Procedural Officer said the meeting was called to elect a Chairperson following the resignation of the former chair. This was in terms of Standing Rules 82 (1) which states that Members must nominate a chairperson. He called for nominations.

Mr P Marais (FF+) nominated Mr D America (DA).

Mr A van Der Westhuizen nominated Mr G Pretorius (DA).

Ms M Maseko (DA) seconded the nomination of Mr Pretorius.

Mr America thanked Mr Marais for the nomination but declined it.

There were no further nominations.

The Senior Procedural Officer duly declared Mr Pretorius as the Chairperson.

Chairperson comments

The Chairperson thanked Members for the nomination. He thanked the former chair for the work done. While preparing for the budget vote, he noted that according to a 2021 World Health Organisation report, there are 300 000 cases of TB in South Africa, 56 000  deaths per year in SA and shockingly, 30 000 of those are children. The Committee has its work cut out for it. He encouraged Members to send their ideas on agenda items and looked forward to working with Members to make a difference.
