In a virtual meeting, the Committee considered and adopted several of its 2020 meeting minutes.

The Committee discussed the importance of staying on top of minutes so that they did not pile up. This was important for Members to remember what was discussed and stay on top of what the Committee tasked the Department to do or follow up on.

Meeting report

The following meeting minutes were considered and adopted: 5 May 2020, 15 May 2020, 26 May 2020, 2 June 2020, 8 July 2020, 9 July 2020 and 10 July 2020.

During the consideration of the minutes, the Chairperson stressed the importance of Members reading the minutes to stay on top of the issues and so it was important to ensure the minutes were adopted timeously while the issues were still fresh in the mind of the Committee.

Ms N Sharief (DA) agreed and recommended that at regular intervals, the Committee discuss “matters arising” where it tracks all matters the Committee had tasked the Department with. The concern was that things were missed as the Committee was busy.

The Chairperson agreed and said one Wednesday a month should be dedicated to considering and adopting minutes and following up on issues – the Committee staff were asked to assist the Members with this.

The Committee Content Advisor informed Members that she does provide information on resolutions taken during previous meetings regarding he Department and entities. The information looked at what was implemented, what was not implemented and what progress was made. This is made available to Members in the briefing documents. She would look at also providing this information over the course of the month.

Ms B Maluleke (ANC) said there should be a specific resolutions register. This is one of the matters that have been raised regarding Parliament’s oversight in the Zondo Commission.

The Chairperson said outstanding minutes would be adopted next week. members were urged to read them beforehand to save time.

The meeting was adjourned.
