Extension of SANDF members in Western Cape
Meeting Summary
The Committee met to consider the report of the President on the extension of employment of the South African National Defence Force for service in cooperation with the South African Police Service which was tabled in Parliament on 13 September 2019. Members supported the extension.
The Committee then adopted its report on the extension of employment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) for service in cooperation with the South African Police Service where it was said The Committee welcomes and notes the extension of the deployment of the SANDF.
Committee minutes and third term programme were adopted without amendments.
Meeting report
Extension of Employment of Members of the SANDF for service in cooperation with SAPS
Chairperson Nchabaleng reminded Members that when the letter from the President reached Parliament, the NCOP was in the provinces conducting provincial activities. This is why the letter was only being considered in the meeting now and not when it was first tabled.
Chairperson Nchabaleng said there was no need for discussion on the letter from the President. The Committee simply needs to acknowledge the letter and its contents.
The Chairperson proceeded to read out the report to the Committee.
Report of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence on the Extension of Employment of the South African National Defence Force for service in cooperation with the South African Police Service, dated 10 October 2019
Chairperson Nchabaleng took the Committee through the Report which detailed that the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, having considered the letter from the President, dated 13 September 2019 on the extension of employment of members of the South African National Defence Force for service in cooperation with the South African Police Service for the prevention and combating of crime, maintenance and preservation of law and order within the Western Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa, reports that it has concluded its deliberations thereon. The Committee welcomes and notes the extension of the deployment of the SANDF in terms of section 201 (2) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 from 16 September 2019 to 31 March 2020.
Discussion
Mr D Ryder (DA) acknowledged the letter from the President and also welcomed it. He said it was good because it gives people a chance to do their job.
Mr A Gxoyiya (ANC) acknowledged the letter from the President and welcomed it.
Mr T Mmutle (ANC) said the extension of employment should be noted
Mr M Nyhontso (PAC) seconded the previous remarks on the extension of employment and supported it.
Consideration and adoption of minutes
The Committee considered and adopted its minutes dated 23 August 2019 and 12 September 2019 without amendments.
Consideration and adoption of third term programme
The Committee considered and adopted its programme for the current term.
