The Committee elected Ms Gillion to be its chairperson.

The new Chairperson thanked the Members for the appointment and said the Committee must be near to the communities and play its role to ensure that the dignity of the people in communities facing dire challenges was returned.

Opening remarks

The Committee Secretary, Ms Marcelle Williams, welcomed everyone present and announced the agenda for the day. She stated that in terms of Rule 91 of the NCOP (National Council of Provinces), the Committee must on its first meeting elect one of its Members as the Chairperson of the Committee. The procedure outlines that the Committee Secretary would call for nominations and a seconder from the floor, if there is one nomination that person would be declared as the Chairperson of the Committee; but if there is more than one nomination, the names of the nominees would be put to a vote by a show of hands. After the end of the vote, a nominee with the majority of votes would be declared as the Chairperson of the Committee. Members can only vote once.

She called for nominations.

Nominations

Ms M Gillion (ANC; WC) was nominated and this was seconded.

Ms Gillion accepted the nomination.

Chairperson’s remarks

The new Chairperson thanked the Members for the appointment and said the Committee must be near to the communities and play its role to ensure that the dignity of the people in communities facing dire challenges was returned. Hopefully, Members would not play politics but serve the country as they should. People should be put first. 

Members congratulated Ms Gillion and assured her that Members would work with her and provide full support where it is needed so that the Committee can fulfil its mandate.
