Meeting Summary

The Committee met briefly to conclude the election of the co-chairpersons for the Ad Hoc Joint Committee on Probing Violence Against Foreign Nationals. Those elected were Ms N Bhengu (ANC) and Mr T Motalshuping (ANC; North West) No further recommendations or proposals were discussed. 

 

Meeting report

Election of Chairperson
The meeting was introduced by two parliamentary representatives who informed the Members that they were required to elect the co-chairs of the joint committee in accordance with the Rules of Parliament. 



Firstly, the National Assembly component: Ms Z Dlamani-Dubazana (ANC) proposed Ms N Bhengu (ANC) Adv K Mpumlwana (ANC) supported this nomination. 



Secondly, the National Council of Provinces component: Ms L Dlamini (ANC) proposed Mr T Motlashuping (ANC); a further Member seconded this nomination. 



Ms N Bhengu (ANC) thanked the Members of the National Assembly for electing her as chairperson. She recognised the enormous task which lies ahead. She proposed that following this meeting, both co-chair persons meet in order to discuss how future tasks should be executed.



Mr T Motlashuping (ANC) shared the sentiments of his co-chair. He expressed his desire to travel this journey together with the other Members, so as to restore the dignity of South Africa.



Adv K Mpumlwana congratulated the successful Members, and wished them well in their new role. 



Mr R Chance (DA) raised a concern about the projected date of submission for the Committee Report, in light of the workload.

Ms Bhengu replied by informing the Members that it would be difficult to say at this moment, however efforts will be made to ensure this.

Further, Members recognised the importance of delivering the mandate for the security of the country; differences must be put aside with safety in mind.
