Opening Remarks
The Chairperson said that, excluding the sets of minutes adopted today, the Committee had about four sets of minutes that need to be adopted; but these would be adopted at the next meeting. The Committee had to expedite the adoption of outstanding minutes as soon as possible, as this would determine which delegations would be allowed to go overseas. Today the Committee would adopt the sets of minutes dated: 13; 15; 17 of March, as well as 18 of April.

The Chairperson tabled the minutes for consideration.

Mr L Max (DA) suggested that the Committee amend a portion (found in page 4 of the draft minutes) of the minutes to substitute the phrase “racist way” with “the inconsistent way”.

The Committee agreed that the phrase should be substituted.

The minutes were then approved.

The Chairperson tabled the remaining three minutes for consideration.

Members were satisfied with the content and approved the minutes with no amendments.

Other Matters
The Chairperson advised at the following meeting, the Committee needed to focus its questions around the problem of vacancies in the Department of Correctional Services. In particular, the Committee needed to focus on the trend rather than the actual data that would be presented. The Committee should seek to dig deeper than what the Department would present, as the latter would mainly focus on the finances.

The Chairperson further suggested that the Committee should ask about the spate of escapes or attempted escapes and why these were first publicised in the media. The Committee researcher was asked to look into these issues.

Mr S Abram (ANC) asked if the Committee planned an interaction with the Auditor-General.

The Chairperson responded that it was not necessary to do so at this stage.
