SUMMARY

The 2002 committee programme was accepted by all present.

MINUTES
The Chair invited members to raise any objections with the proposed programme for 2002.

Dr P J C Nel (NNP) inquired whether the public hearings on child labour scheduled for 5/6 March 2002 will be hosted by this Committee.

The Chair replied that the initial plans included these hearings, but approval has not yet been received from the deciding body. The hearings would, however, take place as scheduled even in the absence of such authority. The only concern here is that this Committee may very well have left itself too little time to advertise the public hearings in the media, as a minimum of 10 days is needed beforehand to sufficiently publicise the event. It is therefore suggested that the Child Abuse hearings be postponed. The programme can be “fine tuned throughout the course of the year, but the essence has to remain as presented.

Mr L G Lever (DP) contended that the programme for the second term should not be as inflexible as the first, as this Committee cannot foresee events that may arise during the course of the second term.

Dr Nel inquired whether the next meeting scheduled for the 27 February 2002 will entail a briefing by the Departments on the 2002 programme and budget.

The Chair informed Dr Nel that the Departments will brief the Committee on all matters to be addressed by the Departments and this Committee during 2002. It would take the form of a joint meeting and an elaborate discussion.

The Chair noted that there were no objections to the proposed 2002 programme for this Committee, and declared it accepted by all present. He reminded Members that the programme “is not cast in stone and should any unforeseen matters arise during the course of this year, all efforts will be made to fit it into the programme.

The meeting was adjourned.
