Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery calls on members of the public to make inputs on the draft guidelines for Commissioners and Clerks of the Small Claims Courts. This call is intended to ensure that the guidelines are comprehensive and reflective of inputs from the public and any other interested stakeholders.

Deputy Minister Jeffery said that although the State plays a key role in the functioning of the Small Claims Courts, it is important for the courts to be owned by the entire population in order for them to be impactful.

Members of the public have until 1 November 2016 to make inputs. Inputs will be considered in the finalisation of the guidelines and will apply to the functionality of all 371 Small Claims Courts nationally.

The Small Claims Courts are used to settle minor civil disputes and claims not exceeding R15 000, without representation by an attorney. Any person may lodge a claim in a Small Claims Court and its services are rendered free of charge.
