Report of the Portfolio Committee on Police on the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) on the State of Shelters in SA dated 8 December 2021.

1.         Introduction

The CGE tabled a report, titled “Investigative Report of the State of Shelters in South Africa” in Parliament in May 2019, which was referred to the Portfolio Committee on Police for consideration. The CGE Report highlights the various responsibilities of the SAPS in terms of shelters, but the Report did not make any recommendations regarding the SAPS.

2.         Committee Deliberations

The Committee noted that the CGE found that there are good relationships between shelters and the SAPS across all provinces. The Committee felt that on the SAPS was working satisfactorily with Shelters although it did not know what the number of shelters in the country was.

3. Recommendations

1.The Committee thanks and applauds the SAPS for its support to shelters.

2. The Committee recommends that the SAPS together with the CGE research and make a list of shelters available to all local police stations

3. The Committee recommends that the SAPS increases its training initiatives and training programmes on Victim empowerment.

4. The Committee recommends that Parliament adopts the report.
