Report of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education on attending the 20th National Teaching Awards, dated 3 March 2020.
 

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, having attended the 20th Annual National Teaching Awards on 15 February 2020 at the Soshanguve East Secondary School, Soshanguve, Pretoria, reports as follows:

 

1.         Introduction

 

  1. The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education received an invitation from the Department of Basic Education to send a multi-party delegation to attend the 20th Annual National Teaching Awards at the Soshanguve East Secondary School, Soshanguve, Pretoria on 15 February 2020.

 

  1. The delegation comprised the following members of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education: Hon B P Mbinqo-Gigaba MP (ANC) (Chairperson), Hon N G Adoons MP (ANC) and Hon N Tarabella-Marchesi MP (DA).

 

  1. The member of staff who formed part of the delegation was Mr L A Brown, the Committee Secretary.

 

2.         Background

The National Teaching Awards was conceptualised and launched in 2000 and entered its twentieth year of implementation in 2020. The function is a way to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts made by teachers, often in difficult conditions. The awards also acknowledge, motivate  and encourage dedicated  caring teachers in their efforts to develop learners. The main objectives of the National Teacher Awards are to:

 

  • Focus public attention on the positive aspects of Basic Education, thereby raising the public image of the teaching profession;
  • Recognise and promote excellence in teaching performance;
  • Honour dedicated creative and effective teachers and schools;
  • Encourage best practice in schools; and
  • Afford South Africans the opportunity to publicly thank teams and individual teachers in schools.

 

Each year the Department recognizes and promotes the extraordinary efforts of some of the nation’s most dedicated teachers while promoting and saluting excellence in the teaching profession. Through the National Teaching Awards, the Department of Basic Education acknowledges the extraordinary efforts of teachers, often achieved under very difficult conditions in service to children from underprivileged families and economically depressed communities. The 20th National Teaching Awards recognised outstanding teaching and leadership in the following categories and awards:

  • Excellence in Grade R Teaching;
  • Excellence in Primary School Teaching;
  • Excellence in Secondary School Teaching;
  • Excellence in Special Needs Teaching;
  • Excellence in Primary School Leadership;
  • Excellence in Secondary School Leadership;
  • Excellence in Teaching Physical Science;
  • Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (GET);
  • Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning;
  • Lifetime Achievement Award; and
  • Prof Kader Asmal Award.

 

3.         National Teaching Award Ceremony Programme

 

            The National Teaching Awards Ceremony programme followed the following format:

  • A welcome address by Dr M R Mhaule, Deputy Minister of Basic Education;
  • Introduction of programme directors;
  • Introduction of the keynote speaker, Mr J Mthembu, Minister in the Presidency by Mrs A Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education;
  • Keynote Address by Mr J Mthembu, Minister in the Presidency
  • Sponsors Recognition Certificates;
  • Adjudicators Recognition Certificates and
  • Vote of thanks by Mr H M Mweli, Director-General: Department of Basic Education.

 

4.         National Teaching Awards

After the address by Minister Mthembu, the programme moved to the various awards and winners as follows:

 

4.1 Excellence in Grade R Teaching:

1st Place – Ms Michelle Swart, Hermanus Pre-Primary School, Western Cape

2nd Place – Ms Asja-Leah Katia Strydom, Despatch Preparatory School, Eastern Cape

3rd Place – Ms Tsholofelo Nicole Thati, Atlarelang Primary School, North West

 

4.2 Excellence in Primary School Teaching:

1st Place – Ms Mikhongelo Florence Precilla Bekwa, Magangeni Primary School, Limpopo

2nd Place – Ms Vanilla Nick, Umzintovale Primary School, KwaZulu-Natal

3rd Place – Ms Chantel Botha, Laerskool Andalusia Primary School, Northern Cape

 

4.3 Excellence in Secondary School Teaching:

1st Place – Ms Genevieve Claassen, Fields College; North West

2nd Place – Ms Salome Kelly Mofokeng, Gauteng

3rd Place – Mr Leo Jonathan Raynor, Collegiate Girls High School, Eastern Cape

 

4.4 Excellence in Special Needs Teaching:

1st Place – Ms Catarina Engelbrecht, Platorand Special School, Mpumalanga

2nd Place – Ms Khomotso Athalia Madike, Tlamelang Special School, North West

3rd Place – Ms Parween Manjoo, Inkanyiso Special School, KwaZulu-Natal

 

4.5 Excellence in Primary School Leadership:

1st Place – Ms Londeka Diamond, Westlake Primary School, Western Cape

2nd Place – Ms Magageng Dorothy Masilo, Lekwakwa Primary School, North West

3rd Place – Mr Zacharia Thulani Nkosi, Mlondozi Primary, Mpumalanga

 

4.6 Excellence in Secondary School Leadership:

1st Place – Ms Wendy Horn, Protea Heights Academy, Western Cape

2nd Place – Ms Sahaboodin Abdull, Zinniaville Secondary School, North West

3rd Place – Ms Livhalani Bridget Sinyosi, Dzata Secondary School, Limpopo

 

4.7 Excellence in Teaching Physical Science:

1st Place – Ms Mthombeni Mercia, Bunny Khosa Secondary School, Mpumalanga

2nd Place – Mr Shadrack Nkosana Kheswa, The Sentinel Primary School, Free State

3rd Place – Ms Ayesha Ahmed Ismail, Zinniaville Secondary School, North West

 

4.8 Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (GET):

1st Place – Ms Constance Kgomotso Pilane, Mafenya Primary School, North West

2nd Place – Ms Nombuso Precious Thobela, Likhweti Primary School, Mpumalanga

3rd Place – Ms Gertrude Joalane Phirimana, Zamukuhle Junior Secondary School, Eastern Cape

 

4.9 Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning:

1st Place – Ms Louise Fullard, Hoerskool Bergflam, Mpumalanga

2nd Place – Mr Molepo Tebogo Clemence, Kgwadu Primary School, Limpopo

3rd Place – Ms Adriana Martina Pretorius, Laerskool Rustenburg-Noord Primary, North West

 

4.10 Lifetime Achievement Award:

1st Place – Mr Jacobus Johannes Du Plessis van Rensburg, Ligbron Academy of Technology, Mpumalanga

2nd Place – Mr Melesi Johannes Monnaphiri, Navalsig High School, Free State

3rd Place – Mr Stephen Sebopetsa, Rathaga Primary School, Limpopo

 

4.11 Prof Kader Asmal Excellence Award:

4.         Conclusion

           

The 20th National Teaching Awards Ceremony was concluded with a special word of thanks from the Director-General, Mr H M Mweli.
