Report of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on the nomination of an Electoral Commissioner, dated 24 February 2015

 

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, having considered the letter from the Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Mogoeng Mogoeng, to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Baleka Mbete reports as follows:

 

The Chief Justice recommended candidates for consideration for appointment as an Electoral Commissioner based on interviews conducted by a panel which was established in terms of section 6(3) of the Electoral Commission Act (No. 51 of 1996). The panel comprised of the following members: The Chief Justice (Chairperson), the Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, the Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality and the Public Protector.

 

The letter reported a list of recommended candidates for the filling of a vacancy in the Electoral Commission and their curricula vitae in terms of section 6 of the Act. The letter was referred to the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs (the Committee) on 25 November 2014 in terms of Section 6(2) (d) of the Act.

 

The Committee met on 24 February 2015 to consider the panel’s letter.  The Committee deliberated and has resolved to recommend that the House approves the nomination of Mr Vuma Glenton Mashinini for appointment as an Electoral Commissioner.
