Report of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on the nomination of a judge to serve on the Electoral Commission, dated 28 April 2011

 

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, having considered the matter of the nomination of a judge to serve on the Electoral Commission, referred to it, reports as follows:

The Committee was requested to recommend the appointment of a judge to fill the vacancy on the Electoral Commission in terms of section 6 of the Electoral Commission Act, 1996 (Act No 51 of 1996).

The panel contemplated in section 6(3) of the Act and chaired by the President of the Constitutional Court has considered the names of candidates to fill the vacancy on the Electoral Commission and recommended six names for consideration by the Committee.

The Committee met on 28 April 2011 to deliberate on the matter. After having considered the candidates recommended by the panel, the Committee recommends that the House, in accordance with section 6 of the Act, make a recommendation to the President of South Africa that Judge GM Makhanya be appointed to serve on the Electoral Commission.
