Report of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development on the recommendation of a suitable person for appointment as Deputy Public Protector, dated 21 November 2012

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development having considered the National Assembly‘s request to recommend a suitable person for appointment as Deputy Public Protector in terms of section 2A of the Public Protector Act 23 of 1994, upon the expiry of the term of office of the incumbent, Adv M Shai , on 30 November 2012, reports as follows:

1. After having advertised in the media, the Committee received five nominations for the position of Deputy Public Protector. The following persons were nominated for the position:

a) Ms Lahlang Shirley Somo

b) Ms Motlatjo Josephine Ralefatene

c) Mr Kevin Sifiso Malunga

d) Mr Zwelethu Madikizela

e) Mr Moabi Morubitshi Jankie Sentsho

2. All five nominees were invited to interviews. The Committee, however, interviewed four candidates on 19 November 2012. On the day, Mr Sentsho informed the Committee that he had other commitments despite previously indicating his availability to be interviewed.

Recommendation

The Committee recommends to the National Assembly that Mr Kevin Sifiso Malunga be recommended for appointment as Deputy Public Protector.
