  • South Africa’s population has increased to 55,7 million in 2016 from 51,8 million in 2011, an increase of over three million. The majority (44,9 million) are Black Africans, followed by coloureds (4,9 million), whites (4,5 million), and Indians/Asians (1,4 million).
     
  • Over 150 000 businesses have registered on the Central Supplier Database. Launched in September 2015, the CSD aims to simplify the process of doing business with government, as well as making the procurement process fair, equitable, accountable, open and competitive.
     
  • The annual tax season opened on 1 July 2016 and taxpayers can now complete and submit their 2016 income tax returns.
     
  • South Africa will host the 21st International AIDS Conference from 18-22 July on the theme ‘Access Equity Rights – Now’ in Durban. It  is the largest conference on any health/developmental issue in the world. The world’s top scientists, policymakers and civil society will convene at AIDS2016 to discuss the fight against HIV/AIDS.

  • The Deputy President launched an ambitious national campaign to respond to the unacceptably high rate of new HIV infections among young women and adolescent girls. Almost 2000 new HIV infections occur among young women and girls aged 15–24 in South Africa each week, a rate 2.5 times that among males of the same age.
