  • During October, parliamentary committees conduct performance assessments of government departments and entities. The performance assessments is achieved through the scrutiny of government departments_ and entities_ 2015/16 annual reports and financial statements.   • According to Stats SA, the number of people employed between 2009 and 2015 increased from 14.2 million to 15.7 million. However, it noted that the official unemployment rate of 25.3% in 2015 is 1.6% higher than in 2009. Government has set a target to reduce unemployment rate to 6% – by creating 11 million more jobs by 2030.
  • The Community Work Programme is a government programme aimed at tackling poverty and unemployment.   • Integrated Energy Centres (IeC) are being built to be one-stop centres offering energy services to impoverished rural communities. They will provide access to affordable and quality energy services and offer products like paraffin, diesel, petrol, gas and gas burner stoves that serve the energy needs of these communities.
  • The National Anti-Corruption Hotline (NACH) – 0800 701701 - continues to assist whistle-blowers to report corruption without fear of victimisation.
  • Brand South Africa has launched the Play Your Part and Know Your Constitution, Play Your Part and Live Your Constitution campaign. The three-month campaign, which started on 1 October, is aimed at empowering people with knowledge and information on their rights, as enshrined in the Bill of Rights.

  • The 24 hour toll free Gender Based Violence (GBV) Command Centre:   provide a much needed telephonic counselling to victims of GBV services.   South Africans can call the GBV on 0800 428 428 or dial *120*7867# on their cell phones to be contacted by a social worker.
  • Already 63% of South Africans live in urban areas. This is projected to reach 71% by 2030 and by 2050, eight out of ten people in South Africa will live in an urban area.
