Dear
Sirs,
NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT:
WASTE BILL
The
PET Recycling Company (Pty) Ltd (PETCO) is the plastic industry’s first joint
effort to self-regulate post consumer PET recycling. The company is financed by a voluntary
recycling levy per ton, which is paid by converters on resin purchased, and
grant-in-aid paid to it by brand owners and the resin producers to fulfil their
role of extended producer responsibility. Since 2000, post consumer PET
recycling has grown from less than 2000 tons per annum to 15,000 tons in 2006.
During this period, in excess of a billion bottles of post-consumer PET have
been recycled.
PETCO has participated in the public participation
hearings and has made submissions to DEAT on the Draft Waste Bill. PETCO has also
submitted a draft MOU to DEAT (work shopped together with DEAT on the 21 and 22
February 2006) and we believe that this should
be accorded the status of Industry Waste Management Plans (section 7 of the
Bill).
Thank
you for giving us the opportunity to express our views
Yours
Faithfully
CHERI SCHOLTZ
