South African Geographical Names Council Amendment Bill

Bill is intended to amend the current Act to bring the Act in line with the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) and to empower provinces to perform functions related to geographical names

Funds are available as intervention is based on an already existing piece of  legislation

Will assist in redressing the current imbalance found in the representation of our cultural heritage as manifested in names of cities, towns and streets.

Legal Deposit Amendment Bill

April 2007

Bill is intended to streamline the current Act in light of the last 7 years experience and also to improve enforcement mechanisms and stipulate higher penalties for non-compliance relating to the Legal Deposit of published material.

Funds are available as intervention is based on an already existing piece of legislation

Will assist in ensuring greater transparency with regards to published material and hence enhance service delivery and accountability

Cultural Laws

Amendment Bill

To amend certain provisions relating to Declared Cultural Institutions in the Cultural Institutions Act, 1998 and to bring the current Act in line with the PFMA. 

 

Funds are available as intervention is based on an already existing piece of legislation

Will ensure accountable and transparent use of public funds within the institutions. Also ensure that funds are utilized for the protection of cultural heritage for the benefit of our society

National Heritage Council Act

Amendment Bill

June 2007

Bill is intended to improve the current Act in light of past experience and decrease the size of the current council in the interest of improved corporate governance

Funds are available as intervention is based on an already existing piece of legislation

Greater efficiency through a smaller council. Funds can then be channeled to community heritage groups seeking to revive, restore and protect heritage rather than hinging mostly on operational aspects of the Council

Language Professions Council Bill

To regulate the accreditation and monitoring of language practitioners within the translation and interpreting disciplines.

Funds are available as intervention is based on an already existing piece of legislation

Formalizes the Constitutional recognition of eleven official languages, through an institutional recognition. Promotes a sense of pride in our languages and professional training in this regard.

National Arts Council Amendment Bill

August 2007

To amend certain provisions relating to the selection, short listing and interviewing of nominees to serve as members of the Council and to bring the current Act in line with the PFMA.

Funds are available as intervention is based on an already existing piece of legislation

Will ensure that a Council is selected on the principles of efficacy and effectiveness and is line with Treasury regulations. This in turn will ensure that funds to the NAC are utilized effectively for the purpose of promoting the arts in our society.
