Guidelines and regulations

 

Guidelines developed by the LWCC have been revised to include OIE animal welfare preambles to align with international norms and standards

 

These will be converted to regulations in terms of the existing legislation

All guidelines endorse the five freedoms

(freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition; freedom from fear and distress;  freedom from physical and thermal discomfort; freedom from pain, injury and disease; and freedom to express normal patterns of behavior)

 

SAPA is currently revising the poultry code and the dairy code has been referred to the industry.

 

SA Veterinary foundation (SAVF) has compiled a comprehensive list of codes of practice for all classes of animals – including marine animals

 

 

SAVF has also introduced a sponsors code

 

Establishment of an Animal Care and Protection Working group ( WG ACP )

 

WG ACP needs to established as a matter of urgency

 

This will include representatives from NSPCA, LWCC, SAVA, SAAV, Academia , Wildlife 

 

The DoA focal point will coordinate this WG

First priority – Policy document and regulations

Guidelines for ritual slaughter

NSPCA has liaised with Traditional leaders

Guidelines for the humane handling of animals used for ritual and ceremonial purposes

This should be coordinated by the LWCC – under Dr Michael Levine

 

Guidelines for urban animal agriculture and animal traction

Published guidelines

Both documents include animal care inputs in line with LWCC guidelines and  municipal ordinances

 

Where relevant, ACP will be included in all animal production guidelines

 

 

 

 

Wildlife , Ostrich and Aquaculture guidelines to also include relevant ACP inputs

Administration of the legislation/  Focal point within DoA

 

Agreed up[on a shared responsibility between Animal Health (DAH ) and Animal and Aquaculture Production

 

Animal health will be the focal pint – with a HR component to manage the unit 

 

The animal identification Sub directorate will manage this unit as animal marking has a range of ACP implications
