Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation

9 – 17 September 2017

Canada

The PC on Intentional Relations and Cooperation is undertaking a study tour to Canada from 09-17 September 2017.
The Committee has received, and it is processing the Foreign Service Bill. As a Committee of Parliament, it is mandated by sections 55 and 92 of the Constitution to oversee and ensure accountability in the formulation and conduct of South African foreign policy. Consequently, the Committee conducts oversight on activities of the Department, its policies, financial spending patterns, administrative issues, and it holds the Department accountable for its operations and functions. The Committee is thus mandated by the Constitution to consider legislation affecting the Department, conduct oversight over the Department and its 126 Missions abroad and facilitate public participation in South Africa’s international activities. The Committee may also investigate any matter of public interest that falls within the foreign policy area of responsibility. The Committee is thus an important mechanism for ensuring oversight over the conduct of South Africa’s international relations and cooperation policy.
