Cuthbert, Mr MJ to ask the Minister of Basic Education

Whether she has been informed of the alleged selling of teaching posts at the Unity Secondary School, in Daveyton, Gauteng; if not, will she investigate the allegations; if so, what steps has she taken to address the matter?

Reply:

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) takes allegations of the selling of educator posts very seriously, as such practices are unlawful and undermine the integrity of the education system. The allocation and filling of state-funded educator posts in public schools fall under the responsibility of Provincial Education Departments (PEDs) in accordance with the Employment of Educators Act, 1998 (Act No. 76 of 1998), as amended, and relevant regulations and other legal prescripts governing recruitment and selection processes.

Regarding Unity Secondary School in Daveyton, Gauteng, the question falls under the executive authority of the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in Gauteng. The Honourable Member is therefore kindly requested to refer the question to the MEC for Education in Gauteng in line with Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 and Rule 134(5)(b) of the National Assembly Rules.

Should the allegations at Unity Secondary School be substantiated, the relevant authorities in the province must take swift action to investigate and address any wrongdoing to uphold the integrity of the education system.
