Christians, Dr. DC to ask the Minister of Basic Education

Whether her department will evaluate current Grade R teacher qualifications on a case‑by-case basis; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

Reply:

The evaluation of Grade R teacher qualifications is conducted on a case-by-case basis by evaluators operating under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). This approach is necessary due to the different pathways individuals take to qualify as Grade R educators in the sector.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) continues to collaborate with DHET to ensure that all Grade R educators meet the minimum qualification requirements prescribed by the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications (MRTEQ) framework. The evaluation process includes Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for those with relevant experience but without formal qualifications, as well as pathways for upgrading qualifications where necessary.
