Mhlongo, Ms MN to ask the President of the Republic

(1) Whether the decision of the United States of America (USA) to declare the South African Ambassador to the USA, Mr E Rasool, persona non grata, will influence his decision on who should be the next ambassador to the USA; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, what are the relevant details; (2) what steps will he take to protect the principle of self-determination of the Republic?

Reply:

In the appointment of the next South African Ambassador to the United States of America, the President is guided by Section 84(2)(i) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which confers on him the power to appoint ambassadors, plenipotentiaries, and diplomatic and consular representatives.

The President is required by Section 83(c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa to promote the unity of the nation and that which will advance the Republic.
