Question NW1590 to the President of the Republic
08 April 2025 - NW1590
Mogale, Mr T to ask the President of the Republic
Whether, in light of the Afrikaner refugee programme announced by the President of the United States (US), Mr D J Trump, he intends offering refuge for African American farmers subjected to years of discriminatory practices in the US, such as loss of land and lack of government support in terms of funding due to racist lending practices; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
Reply:
The Refugees Act of 1998 is the primary legal instrument governing the status and rights of refugees and asylum seekers. This Act provides a clear definition of a refugee and establishes the criteria for granting asylum, emphasising the need to protect individuals fleeing persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
