Question NW417 to the President of the Republic
08 April 2025 - NW417
Trollip, Mr A to ask the President of the Republic
Whether he intends to issue a proclamation under the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act, Act 74 of 1996, to launch a Special Investigating Unit investigation into the controversial R21 million drain-cleaning project in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in 2018, which has allegedly resulted in the looting of over R9 million of public funds and is allegedly linked to a series of political and corruption-related assassination-style murders; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, what are the relevant details?
Reply:
I am informed that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) received certain allegations regarding the drain-cleaning project in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality on 7 February 2019. The allegations were registered on the SIU system and assessed on 26 March 2019 by the Case Management Assessment Committee (CMAC).
The CMAC requested further information and/or documents from the whistleblower, but they were not received. Since the documents could not be provided to the SIU, the CMAC recommended on 16 April 2019 that the matter be provisionally closed pending the submission of new or additional information or documents.
The allegations can be re-registered with the SIU and processed if new information or documents become available.
