Question NW474 to the Minister of Communications
25 September 2019 - NW474
Van Damme, Ms PT to ask the Minister of Communications
1. What reasons did a certain official (name and details furnished) give for resigning; 2. Whether she has found that there was no undue political interference in the specified person’s decision to resign; if not; (a) will the alleged undue political interference be investigated and (b) what action will be taken against persons found to have been involved in the alleged exercising of the undue political interference in the specified person’s decision to resign? NW1466E
Reply:
I have been advised by SAPO as follows:
- The erstwhile Post Office GCEO, Mr Mark Barnes, mainly cited the ultimate separation of the shareholding, control and management of Postbank and SAPO as his main reason for his resignation. He reasoned that the decision goes against the agreed strategy for SAPO business model founded on a diversified revenue strategy.
- The resignation letter does not indicate that undue political interference was the reason for the resignation. (a) and (b) are therefore not applicable.
