Hlonyana, Ms NKF to ask the Minister of Health

(1) Whether he was informed of a patient who died at Addington Hospital in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, after jumping out of a window; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, (2) whether the matter has been investigated; if not, why not; if so, how was the patient able to jump out of the window?

Reply:

I was not informed about the patient who died at Addington Hospital after jumping out of the window.

According to a report from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health the patient was observed to be calm and quiet in the emergency department and was admitted to the medical ward. After the nurse admitted the patient, and whilst his mother was in the ward, the patient got off the bed and rushed to the window and tried to force the wonder open. This mother tried to stop him and shouted for help. Before he could be restrained unfortunately he forced his way through the window with force, breaking the hinges and fell 13 floors.  The SAPS was called to the scene to investigate.

END.
