Briefing by Parliamentary Legal Adviser on the Correctional Services Amendment Bill
Mr N Vanara, Parliamentary Legal Adviser, stated his aim was allay Members’ fears about the Bill. He reminded the Committee that he has been involved with the Bill from its inception, when it was with the Committee, moved on to the Select Committee and was now back with the Portfolio Committee.
The Constitution granted the Committee the latitude to either accept or reject the input made by the Select Committee on the Bill. However, the Select Committee did not make any substantial alterations to the Bill.
The Chairperson proposed that a sub Committee - consisting of approximately two Members of the Committee and Mr Vanara – be established to peruse the Bill on behalf of the Committee and make adequate recommendations.
The proposal was supported by Mr J Selfe (DA).
Committee Report on Brandfort and Grootvlei Correctional Centres oversight visit The Committee considered the Report but was unable to adopt it as insufficient Members were present. Its adoption was postponed to the following Tuesday.
Committee Report on its oversight visit to Pollsmoor Hospital Sections The Committee considered the Report but also postponed its adoption to the following Tuesday as insufficient Members were present.
Adoption of minutes
The Committee could not adopt minutes of its previous meetings held on 13, 20, 21 and 22 of November 2007, because the required quorum at the meeting was not met.
The meeting was adjourned.
