Meeting report

Committee First Term Programme
Mr E Trent (DA) requested that the arms deal be placed on the agenda for discussion at the next Plenary. In addition, he claimed that the Chairperson’s predecessor had given the Committee an unequivocal assurance that this matter could be resurrected once “new evidence came to light”.

The Chairperson stated that the Member would have to provide sufficient motivation as to why the Committee should revisit an issue that had been previously debated and concluded. He acknowledged that such a request would provoke a “torrent” of media reaction. Consequently, he appealed to Members to appreciate the sensitivities surrounding the issue and to conduct any inquiry in an objective fashion. Moreover, he asserted that any re-opening (of the issue) must be premised on the existence of new evidence. Finally, he mentioned that he would allow Mr Trent to state his case in the following week.

The Committee considered its provisional programme for the first quarter of the year. After implementing a few minor amendments, Members adopted it.

Committee Resolutions
The Committee scanned through and adopted numerous draft resolutions (with amendments) concerning the following government departments: Land Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, Presidency, Public Works, Justice and Constitutional Development, Correctional Services, Health, Defence and Public Services and Administration. Equally, the Committee approved resolutions relating to SAA and De Beers with amendments

Adoption of minutes
The Committee considered and adopted its minutes of the meeting held on 23 November 2007, with amendments.

 The meeting was adjourned.
