SUMMARY
The Committee adopted its Reports on oversight visits to the Makhado Air Force base and to the South African Army Combat training centre Lohatla in the Northern Cape. Plans for the Committee’s proposed trip to Sudan were also discussed.

MINUTES
Committee Report Makhado Air Force Base oversight visit
The Committee considered the Report, but proposed no amendments.

Mr J Schippers (ANC) moved for the adoption of the Report, which was seconded by Moulana
Sayedali-Shah (DA)

The Report was adopted without amendments.

Committee Report on Lohatla Military Base Visit
Moulana Sayedali-Shah commented that the Committee was not able to determine what exactly had happened at the Air Force base, but could only comment on the circumstances that surrounded the accident. He moved for the Report to be adopted, which was seconded by Mr Schippers.

The Report was adopted by the Committee, with amendments.

Letter from the President on Deployment of SANDF to Uganda
There was no discussion on the letter on South African National Defence Force (SANDF) deployment to Uganda.

Mr A Moseki (ANC) moved to adopt the Letter, which was seconded by Mr J Phungula (ANC).

Committee Visit to Darfur
The Chairperson asked the Committee Secretary for an update on the plans for its proposed visit to Darfur, Sudan.

The Committee Secretary, Mr J Ramrock, replied that the visit was proposed by the Portfolio Committee on Defence and not the Joint Committee on Defence. The arrangements for the proposed trip should be made by the Committee Secretary to the Portfolio Committee on Defence.

The meeting was adjourned.
