PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON HOME AFFAIRS
14 November 2006
SADC PROTOCOL ON MOVEMENT OF PERSONS & COMMITTEE 2007 PROGRAMME: POSTPONMENT OF CONSIDERATION
Chairperson: Mr H Chauke (ANC)
Documents handed out:
Draft Committee Programme for 2007
The Committee was unable to receive a briefing from the Department of Home Affairs on the facilitation of movement of persons in the SADC region, as planned, because the Department failed to arrive. The Committee was also unable to consider its Draft Committee Programme for 2007 as insufficient Members were present.
Briefing by Department on SADC protocol
The Committee Secretary, Mr R Mankge, explained to the Members that he had made arrangements with the Department of Home Affairs (the Department) to brief the Committee on that day, which the Department confirmed telephonically with him personally. He thus failed to understand why they were not present at the meeting. He was also unable to get hold of any member of the Department’s delegation on that morning, as their cellphones were off. Mr Mankge suspected that their flights could very well have been delayed or cancelled, and he resolved to continue to get hold of them.
Committee Programme for 2007
The Chairperson was disappointed with the poor turn out of Members at the meeting, as only four attended. He informed the Members present that he had hoped to discuss the Committee Programme for 2007, but was unable to do so as there were not sufficient Members present.
Mr Swart (DA) expressed his gratitude to the Chairperson and thanked him for the outstanding work he had done over the past year, particularly with the pressures that have been mounting on the Committee over the second half of the year.
The Chair wished the Members a good break and an enjoyable festive season.
The meeting was adjourned.
