MINUTES

The Committee had discussions around the questions:

• How many candidates would be shortlisted?

• How many vacancies are there?
  -11. Only the Chairperson remains. However, the Committee should check its mandate regarding any intention to recommend the appointment of all eleven commissioners.
• How many of these are part-time and how many are full-time?
   Section 3( 4)(b) of the Commission on Gender Equality Act No. 39 of 1996 provides: No fewer than two and no more than seven members shall be appointed on a full-time basis.

What would be the term of each Commissioner? Would it be for the full period or for one year until the Chairperson's date of expiry of term?
-The Chairperson of the Committee would communicate with the Deputy Minister of Justice regarding this question.
-The Committee should also take into consideration that the Chapter 9 institutions are currently under review and it would be ideal to be cautious when making recommendatjons for appointments that the outcome of this review may impact upon the structure of the institutions and thus the terms of office of the Commissioners in the case of the CGE.
