Draft programme for interviews

In terms of legal advice received, late entries can be accepted if nomination itself is in time, but additional documentation (e.g. CV) arrives late. However, it was decided not to accept the nomination of Dr Maitse, whose actual nomination arrived late according to the office of the Deputy Speaker. Ms Malan wished to review the acceptance of the three previous late mis-routed nominations from the ANC (Mesdams Tlake, van Wyk and Makina). The Chairperson emphasised that she had spoken to Mr Lawson (adviser to the Speaker) who confirmed that the actual nominations had been made in time. Ms Malan reserved her party's position until Mr Lawson's confirmation in writing could be obtained.

Ms Malan presented a list of nine prioritised names out of the previous shortlist of 24 prepared in conjunction with the IFP and PAC. She felt sure they would approve these choices.

Ms Smuts sent a message that she would forward the DP list later. Ms Hangana, who had appeared briefly, was replaced by Mr Khasu, who read out the ANC list.

The Chairperson re-affirmed that a wide geographic spread of nominees was advisable. The Commission on Gender Equality would also welcome motivated men, as the four vacancies were caused by the departure of three black women and one white man. The listed NP priorities were predominantly from Gauteng, though some had connections with other provinces.

The meting was adjourned for 30 minutes for negotiation.

A combined shortlist of 12 was achieved, taking into account the 'capacity gaps' on the Commission on Gender Equality and the need for wide geographic representation. The Chairperson would consult with 'designated members' of parties not present, in terms of regulations.

Asked whether this ad hoc committee would handle other vacancies occurring on the Commission on Gender Equality later, she clarified that after interviewing and reporting to Parliament the committee would terminate its duties and its existence. The President would appoint a Chairperson for the Commission on Gender Equality from amongst its full membership.

Interviews would probably be unable to start until Monday 17 August. Funding permission would be needed to fly people in for interviews from other regions. Commissioner. would be appointed for the unexpired portion of the terms of office of those who had left.

The meeting ended at 3.45 p.m.
