Letter from Commission on Gender Equality (dated 27.7.98 concerning skills needed on the Commission)

List of 65 nominations to Commission on Gender Equality

The chairperson read out the letter from Commission on Gender Equality which elaborated on the need for a black person with a legal background. A schedule of the backgrounds of sitting members of the Commission had previously been received.

One late CV had only arrived that morning and it was decided that a) the date of the relevant nomination should be checked and b) legal advice should be sought.

The meeting was adjourned for half an hour and the members of the IFP, NP and PAC met ("in the corridor") to compare and combine their shortlists.

The list of 65 nominees includes four late entries which had been accepted, plus the last three nominations which came from the mis-routed ANC letter attached to the previous minutes. So far only the combined IFP, NP and PAC shortlist of 24 names has been ticked on it.

At the next meeting at 2.30 pm on Monday 3 August 1998 this group has been asked to prioritise 12 of their names. The ANC and DP will also bring shortlists of 8 -12 names each.

The meeting ended at 10.20 am.
