Documents handed out:
Committee report recommending appointments (see Appendix)
SUMMARY
Eight people were suggested by committee members. Only five were needed for recommendation to the President. The committee agreed on the following candidates for appointment:
Prof Sangweni, Ms M Rantho, Mr J Ernstzen, Mr J Vilakazi and Prof E Bain.
DETAILED MINUTES
The Chairperson, Mr Sikakane, gave an overview of the previous meetings where candidates were interviewed and he thanked all members who participated in interviewing the candidates. Members of the committee were asked to put forward the names that they would like to see included on the final list that would go to the president. Parties were given time to caucus on the names.
The National Party proposed that, because the Commission is an independent body the committee should not politicise the issue of candidates and that instead consensus should be reached. Prof Sangweni, Ms M Rantho, Mr J Ernstzen were reached by consensus of all parties. Mr J Vilakazi and Prof E Bain were voted in: Vilakazi was voted in by the African National Congress and Bain was voted in by the ANC and National Party.
